I want to convert a VHS that I recorded (and own) to DV and then to iMovie. I have a Canon ZR10 DV camera and have read that this is possible. I have searched the forums and everyone says that I should be able to do this, but nobody gives the specifics on it. I need specifics. So I need the following question answered, how do I take a VHS, put it into my VCR and play it back onto my ZR10 and record the movie onto a mini-tape? I have plugged it into the VCR then into the camera and tried to bring it over that way but all I get is either the image shown on the camera being shown onto to the TV, or the camera view on the TV. When I hit ?play? the video will play but only on the TV, not on the DV camera. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help

I do it on a Canon Elura, which I assume is similar:

1. Plug the RCA leads (red, yellow, white) into the VCR OUT jacks. Plug the other end into the camera's A/V jack.

2. Turn the camera on "VCR". Press the REC/PAUSE (LINE-IN) button. This will set the camera to paused-record mode. When you're ready to record from the VCR, press the PLAY/PAUSE button and the camera will start recording.

When you're finished, press the STOP button, rewind the DV tape and download it to your Mac via the Firewire cable.

Sounds like you plugged the RCA leads into the IN jacks rather than OUT jacks on the VCR, and/or turned the camera to MOVIE rather than VCR.

There are conversion services around. Look in the yellow pages under video and/or film. I believe there are also some services that do mail-order but I don't remember their names.

You just need an 8mm deck or camera. Can you borrow one to get the footahe in?

Basically what you are doing is simple analog to digital (in this case DV) conversion.
