a friend and i have started taking work to the level of doing commercials. its a situation that needs to be controlled from the gate by us because we are not a company with credentials to prove our real world work to show clients. we do have plenty of experience to go above and beyond 75% of all the commercials in our area to start out with, but the real work is just pitching and landing your business and set idea to the potential client before the production even takes place.

we are just learning the ropes, just like some of you hopefully, so if you guys want to talk about any and all strategies lets do it.

i will try to help with any questions, and hopefully you guys can help us too

What you should do is develop some sample commercials. Make up a product, or use an existing, generic product (don't infringe on any copyrights or trademarks).

Talk to the local cable company and TV stations. They probably do referrals because companies that call them to do advertising likely don't know much about how to go about it.

Join the Chamber of Commerce. It's usually cheap. They usually get together once a month for drinks or food. Many local businesses will attend. Make sure to have business cards made up before going to this so that you can hand them out.

You need to develop a reel.

Most people do this, if they're starting from scratch, by doing some pieces for free.

Usually having worked in the field for a while (couple years) is enough cred to get a 'freebie' gig from somebody (end client, not ad agency) who usually pays a bit for work.
