iTunes imports MP3s twice

I'm currently using iTunes 4 (was using 3) and have all my MP3s in a single folder. Well, when I went to import them, iTunes imported every song twice, so now I have to scroll through double the songs. I had seen this behaviour before when I streamed ("imported") over airport from other computers, but why does it occur when the files are local? I've deleted the playlists and re-added the songs to the library but it's done the same thing the last 5 times I tried it. . .is there something I'm missing?

PS. I wish there was a REMOVE DUPLICATES feature

PPS. and no I don't actually have two of every song
