iMovie3 audio levels ignored upon export?

I added a soundtrack (mp3 songs) to my home movie. Within iMovie3 I adjusted the volume of the MP3 files and the volume of the speech so that the sountrack didn't wash out the speech. When I play the movie within iMovie the audio levels are just how I wanted. However, when I exported it (format size didn't matter - Full quality DV to email version) the MP3-derived soundtrack blows away the speech component. I went back to iMovie, reduced the soundtrack to 1% of original, increased the speech track to the maximum (150%) - and re-exported it as Full Quality DV. This did not seem to make the slightest difference in the exported movie audio- the soundtrack was still much louder than the speech track (within iMovie it played as you might expect: couldn't hear soundtrack and speech was way too loud). It seems that what you hear in iMovie is NOT what you get upon export - at least in my case involving two audio tracks. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this somewhere FCP or FCE excel? Any ideas and input are greatly appreciated. Many thanks!
(I recorded the sound at 16 bit too).

I just experienced the exact same problem with iMovie 3.02. When I exported to full quality DV, the audio settings and fades were lost. It sucks. I guess it's yet another iMovie bug. Between this problem and audio/video sync problems, I must have wasted several man-days on iMovie.

Well, thanks for letting me know the problem is not unique to my technique or computer. As for your audio syncing issue, if you aren't already aware from many posts about it, the solution is to record your audio in 16-bit instead of 12-bit.
Thanks!

Apparently this is a bug in iMovie3. The solution is quite simple, though for those of us who don't know it, it creates a huge headache.
