Sorry if you saw this message before, but I decided that this is a better forum to ask the question in. I did a search and couldn't find any results that were very fresh...

I am looking for a good way of encoding DV streams to divx right now. So far, I have tried ffmpegx (way unstable, plus it doesn't seem to encode the audio, plus it encodes at like 8fps while hardly impacting my processor) and DivX Pro 5.0.5 (Slloooow and I fricking hate watching 1 of my 2 procs be pegged while the other does nothing.)

Most of the applications mentioned in this thread require vob or at least mpeg2 input. Any other suggestions for a DV source? The files need to be easily playable on Windows machines, and so that pretty much precludes using the Quicktime Pro mpeg4/aac combination. The only way I can seem to get those to play on the PC is with Quicktime and that isn't acceptable. DivX and Xvid are pretty much my favorite 2 options.

I have had good results with using DivX pro on the PC side, I usually get about 30-35 fps of encoding on an Athlon 1800+. My dual 1.25 Powermac only gets about 9-11 fps with similar settings. I am sure the problem lies in the encoder, esp since it is obvious it is not SMP friendly. I would just do the encoding on the PC but moving 25GB DV files is a non-trivial and time consuming task, and I do my capture and editing in Final Cut.

3ivx is a fast encoder, and totally mpeg4 compliant. if you export a video-only mov with 3ivx you can mux it to an mp4 with mp4creator, which will play in anything but QT (for some reason). Or installing 3ivx on the target machine will allow mov playback sans QT (in windows; mac still plays through QT)
