When you save the iDVD project file [projectname.dvdproj] .....

does it contain the whole DVD and all of the movie clips in this container file?

I want to keep backups of the DVDs I burn, and re-call them later to burn if need be.

I thought that the file would contain everything, but my brother recently transported a iDVD project file to me, and I was unable to open it? Saying that the video clips are "missing"? How can this be?

anyway to save the dvd project with everything in tact? even if you move the file to other computers?

any help would be much appreciated! i would like to know before my brother sends me a 3gig idvd project.

i believe that in idvd, similar to final cut pro the project file is just your settings, and does not contain any of the actual clips

From memory: the way I do it is to assemble the movie in iMovie (and all the parts are found in the Media folder within the movie project folder. When sent to iDVD the parts are not copied over, only pointed at by the project file.

Not only that, but the encoded movie seems to itself be a container which points at the parts, rather than be a self-contained ("flattened", if I recall the terms of art) movie. This is rather annoying, as I really did want to share the DV-quality .mov file...

I haven't yet found the easiest way to flatten such a file, nor am I sure whether iDVD could deal with such a thing (if I replaced original.mov with flattened.mov (if I kept the names the same)).

why not just take the DVD you've just burned with iDVD and rip it back to the hard drive?

in case of accidental ingestion, consult a mortician.
