i have a video in iMovie of my mates band playin a live gig and wanted to get the music off it and put it into iTunes is there a way to do this?

Yes --
1st -- you need to extract the audio from the movie that you are working on

2nd -- once the audio has be extracted you need to locate your project folder inside should be a file called Audio 01 (or something like that)

3rd -- control click on the file that you just located and Open with iTunes -- or just drag the file to iTunes on your dock.
