Best-sounding low-cost powered speakers?

My friend wants powered speakers for music in a small (10 feet square) room. She doesn't play music at loud volumes ever, except sometimes to reach the next room. So distortion at high volumes is not a problem. She's not an audiophile, and wants a cheap solution, but she still wants the best quality for the money. Some kind of basic treble-bass control would be nice.

What would give her the best sound in a cheap, easy-to-find set of powered speakers?

The size of the speakers and whether there are 2 or 3, isn't important--just the resulting music (rock and other genres). The speakers will be connected to a CD player and to a Mac--no amplifier. The room is carpeted but has mainly bare walls, if that matters.

Thanks for any recommendations!

I've been really impressed by JBL's creature speakers. My sound design professor has some in her office and loves them, and she's one of the biggest audio snobs ever, so that's probably a good bet

That's interesting--I'd like to hear more reports of those. I looked into them myself at one point, and the concensus seemed to be that they sounded worse than some cheaper speakers. But they look great, and I like the controls.

I've had my Creatures for a while now and I love them. Audio Snobs love to turn their nose up at them because they look cool and don't cost an arm and a leg. Sure, there are better speaker systems out there, but for about $100 I don't think you'll be sorry if you get the Creatures.

Thanks. I think my local CompUSA Apple store has Creatures hooked up to iTunes, so my friend can try them for herself!
