Hey all,

I have never created a VCD or and SVCD, and I have a few questions.

First off, what is the difference between VCD and SVCD?

I would like to make as much of it as I can on my mac, but then burn it on my pc (as my iBook does not have a burner)

Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Chris Gilpin

what is the source you are trying to create a VCD or an SVCD from? A VCD is a very specific bitrate mpeg-1, which has so-so quality, but looks fine on a TV. An SVCD is mpeg-2 based, and looks pretty much like DVD quality. Typically a VCD will require 2 CDs, while an SVCD takes up 3 CDs.

Take a look at some of these:

VCD - MPEG-1 video at 352 x 240 resolution. bitrate of 1150kbps. (roughly 10 MB per minute of footage). 80 minutes will fit on an 80 min CDR. quality is roughly comparable to VHS, but can look pretty bad on high-motion scenes.

SVCD - MPEG-2 video at 480 x 480 resolution. bitrate can be variable up to approx 2700kbps. (roughly 20 MB per minute of footage). up to 40 minutes will fit on an 80 min CDR. quality can be near-DVD standard, if encoded well.

check www.dvdrhelp.com for much more info and help on how to create VCDs/SVCDs.
