Just finished my first project in final cut express and am archiving it all, do i 'need' to keep the render files or can they be binned?

No, bin them. You can always render it again if you want to go back to the project.
(Unless of course your project was all insanely complicated composites that took several years to render... and you don't like waiting )

On this topic, is it better to delete the render files through the render manager, or just drop them in the trash?
