Am I correct in assuming based on Apple's site that no Samsung cameras nor the Panasonic PV-DV53 are iMovie compatible?

probably not, just because it's not on there doesn't mean they don't work, just that apple hasn't bothered to test them. Most DV cams will work.

Well, then a better question, is if anyone has tried the PV-DV53 or any Samsungs or the JVC GR-D30US?

I would go ahead and assume the panasonic and the JVC cams will work. I'm not sure about the samsung. My cam, Sony TRV-22 isnt listed, but works fine. Just buy it from a place with a really easy return policy like circuit city and test it out.

Generally the more recent the cam is the more likely it is to just work with iMovie. The DV standard is getting more and more standard. I remember when consumer DV cameras were first getting reeased there were some JVC models that had a wacky implementation of the device control and were not reliable in iMovie, but that has cleared up since then.

Why the need for samsung, jvc or panasonic? Canon makes great consumer cameras for cheap and they're totally reliable.

Not this cheap, Apple just updated there list to include the JVC camera. We're talking $380 new on sale at Sears.
