duh... just realized I probably should have posted this here...

.....

Today Ambrosia Software, Inc. announced the release of WireTap 1.0.0 for MacOS X 10.2 or later. WireTap is a free product for that allows you to record any audio playing on your Mac, saving it to a file for later listening or processing. This allows you to record news from Internet radio stations such as the BBC News, sound snippets from your favorite DVD movie, record the audio from a game, or even iChatAV conversations.

WireTap 1.0.0 can be downloaded here:

WireTap works using a simple tape recorder-like interface. Simply click the record button, and any audio playing through your Mac will be recorded to disk. WireTap can record any sound that is playing regardless of the source, so RealPlayer, iTunes, DVD Player, Windows Media Player, etc. are all supported.

It's pretty cool and simple. I was in a hurry to dump an .mpeg video file on a DV tape. I was able to simply convert the .mpeg file to a .DV file with Quicktime Pro. But I had no audio on my new DV file. I had no time and no patience to download and figure out a demux application to extract the audio from the .mpeg file. So I ran Wire Tap and recorded the audio from the .mpeg file playback (I could easily choose the format and settings of the Wire Tap created file). I resynced the audio to my soundless DV file, in FCP and dumped it to a DV Tape. In all, it took 15 minutes and I had nothing to figure out or debug. And it's free!!!
Also, I can use it to record my guitar playing through Amplitube Live. Great! Now if can only play better...
