Pioneer DVR-7000: Ouptut to Mac?

I have a Pioneer DVR-7000 DVD Recorder and it has a FireWire connector on the front. I've tried a few ways to get the signal from it into my Mac but to no avail. The input auto recognises whether signal is coming in or going out and there's nothing else to configure on the recorder. Anyone have experience with this or have suggestions?
