Im about to backup my 2,000 song library to DVD (preferred method?). How long should it take to back up 4Gb of songs to a disc?

Thanks so much.

I heard there's a third-party firmware update for the powerbook's superdrive to make burn in 2x- anyone know if this is reliable?

the 17" doesn't have the backword compatibility on the firmware update..

so research this subject VERy well before hand.

Someone in this forum did it and appears to have screwed up their 17" powerbook.

I guess it works just fine for 12" models though.

I'd like to back up my library to DVD, too, but I have about 20GB (multiple DVDs). What's the best/easiest way to do this? I have a Pioneer A05 in an external Lacie Firewire case and I've just ordered Toast 6. I'm guessing I can just drag files to Toast and burn them, but is there any better ways? For instance, does iTunes support backing up directly to a third party app like Toast? Will Toast or Apple's backup utility automate the process (split stuff up into DVD-size chunks, burn disks, kick them out, and ask for another)?

Well, I finally gave it a shot and am amazed at how easy it was. First off, thanks for the input. It did take an hour per DVD. It took three DVD's for the whole collection(1,800 songs). For newbies like me, I went to iTunes Preferences, selected the Data CD or DVD button, put 4Gb worth of songs(about 800)in a separate playlist(Named Backup). With playlist selected, click the Burn button, slip in a blank and hit burn again...presto! A new question...Why bother with Toast?

This is my 2nd post.

Just trying to figure this thing out.

I backed up my files to DVD- at 2x took 28 minutes.
