If I use Quicktime to convert a video file to MPEG-2 is there a way I can then play it back when it is in MPEG-2 format?

When I convert it I end up with a .m2v video file and a .aif audio file. I can't work out how I can play the audio and video at the same time and have them aligned.

I have the Quicktime MPEG-2 playback component installed.

some programs will automatically play an audio file if it has the same name (except extension) and in the same directory as the video. I think VLC and Cellulo are among them.

Quicktime will not allow the copy to the clipboard of any mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 data and you need to copy to the clipboard to Add the two kinds of tracks together in one document. The solution is to convert both to non-mpeg formats. Use AIFF or wave for the sound track and NONE, Component Video or MotionJPEG for the video track. Copy the video to the clipboard, go to the sound document, and use Add to put them together. If the sound and video seem to have different durations you can try Add Scaled instead of Add. Never Add Scaled the sound to the video as resampling sound is much more of a problem than the adjustment of the video length to achieve synchronizing.

Some folks are able to use iTunes to convert mpeg sound to AIFF and other report it not working. If you cannot do it, look for an audio utility called MAD, I believe, to do the conversion. Or you can download SoundApp, an old standby Classic sound utility avaiable here:

I have heard that ffmpegX will multiplex sound and video to a new mpeg stream but I have not tried it since it requires OS X 10.2 and up and I am using 10.1.5 for OSX

alternatively you could mux the MPEG and audio with MissingMPEGTools (http://homepage.mac.com/rnc). you might have to encode the audio to mp2 first

I have been trying to use this but I am a bit of an amateur at this sort of stuff. I have tried to convert but I think I am missing the codecs I need. The missingmpegtools software sends me to mjpeg.sourceforge.net to find it but this page is way beyond my compehension. Can anyone explain what I need to do?
