I just bought a canopus advc50 converter for my G4 powermac
Can anyone tell me how to connect the firewire cord to the back of my powermac?
in the installation manual it states in all caps bold print to ONLY USE THE CABLE INCLUDED WITH THE CARD
But the cable is a 4 pin firewire cable with no way to connect to my powermac
the end that connects to the card is 6 pin and the end that connects to the powermac is 4 pin
i'm afraid to test using a 6/6 pin because i dont wanna fry my brand new card
thanks for the help

the ADC50 is just a PCI card, right? there's no need to plug it into any firewire port. from looking at the spec sheet, i think what they are talking about is that the card gets power from a standard 4-pin power supply, if you don't have it hooked up as a PCI card (you can alternatively put it in a 5 1/4" bay).
i'm using an ADVC100 at work, and since that's an external box, i have to plug that in to a firewire port, since that's the only connection to the computer.
are you sure you installed this right? if it's in a PCI slot, there would be no reason to have it hooked up to firewire. am i missing something?

i was hoping to be able to mount the card in the front of my comp for easy access
yes when mounted in the front i need to power with a 5 pinstandard 4pin connection but to transfer the information it needs to then be connected with a firewire cord to a firewire port on the outside of the machine
i'm just not certain how using a 6/6 pin firewire cable to connect might hurt the card - i dont think that it would except for the big warning in the instructions
so does the advc100 have the same type of installation?

when i looked up the info on the ADVC50, and saw how you had to connect it if you wanted to do front bay mount, i thought "what a half-assed way to do it". i think i'd rather just get the ADVC100, and have a small 'usb hub' sized box on my desk. all you have to do for the 100 is connect the power supply to the box, and connect a firewire cable (it has both 4 pin and 6 pin ports). done.
the front ports of the ADVC50 include a 4 pin firewire/iLink port. why don't you just plug the 4-pin end of the cable to the front, and then connect the 6 pin end of the cable to the rear of the mac? sure, now you have a cable strung from the front of the computer to the back, but if you're worried about not using that cable, then that's you're only option.
i'd just go get a 6 pin to 6 pin, and try it. if the card requires a 4 pin power supply connection, then i highly doubt that it will draw any power from the 6 pin firewire port.

thanks bunch
with your confidence behind me(and someone to blame if it did fry my card) i plugged in the advc50 with a 6/6 pin firewire cord and It Worked - no smoke
I do have one other question now though about Core Audio
I was in the assumtion that core audio in os x ment that audio output and input was controlled by OSX without having to rely on individual drivers and settings per each program(like how midi works in OSX now)
my audio plays into iMovie fine but i cant get any audio into sparkME or any other exclusively audio applications
so what is this core audio & built-in-audio controler stuff?
are canopus advc products able to work w/ audio applications?
thanks
