what software is required (preferably free software)

I have toast 5.2 for making the copy, what else is needed?

very basic:
remove the copy proctection
use backup or osex
(probably illegal in your country, e.g. germany)

buy dvd2x (cheap)
recompress the video

burn resulting VIDEO_TS and an empty AUDIO_TS it with toast

best & easiest way!
