Hey Folks, long time no read...

How far are we from an iPod that would exploit its alleged recording capability to make it into a nifty digital recorder?

Is it only a software issue or does it need to be modified hardwarewise?

Imagine this baby in which you'd plug in a quality stereo mike (phantom power through firewire?) or line out from a mixer (for multiple miking), choose the sampling rate and basic recording levels and record directly to disk in glorious aiff (or the format of your choice, although it would suppose onboard real-time codecs).

Am I fantasizing here or would this be the next big iThingy for musicians and reporters alike?

Think about it! No more friggin' DAT tapes!

Cheers!

I posted a similar topic but it concerns SPDIF inputs. The point was that my MD died on me MZR-900 from SONY and it was great cause it had SPDIF inputs/outputs so that when I am doing a shot film or playing on my Korg Triton studio keyboard, I can have a direct SPDIF digital connections to my MiniDisc! Now I want to get an iPod, but the problem remains that it doesn't have a direct to disk capability unless I am going through my powerbook 17" analog stereo input (which works however I prefer a SPDIF DIGITAL signal)

The posting came up with a poll result so far that people think it is not that necessary to have this option in the next revision of iPOD....I guess not alot of Mac Musicians out there who fancy the idea!, Lets start building up the demand for Apple to hear and lets make this a built in SPDIF in/out version by the time the next iPOD comes out! my demo reel and short film teaser my homepage

I started a thread on the Apple forums:

It's had more feedback than here!

Good place to voice your opinion on a future recording iPod!

Cheers

i don't know, i'd like to see recording options on an iPod, but i probably wouldn't use it for recording my music stuff. i use my portable MD recorder now, and what i like is the fact that i can change disks. i wouldn't like having all my data PLUS my mp3's all on the iPod. if i ran out of space while recording something live, then i'm screwed. i'd have to dump the drive first before recording anymore. with my MD (or other removable media), i can pop in a new disk.

you'd only need 10 MB per minute of audio though, at CD quality. surely you can keep a couple of GB free?

apple really should have designed and marketed the ipod for this feature too. pretty much all minidisc is good for these days is good-quality, cheap live recording. it's a pain in the arse transferring the recording back to a computer though.. firewire would make the whole process a breeze.

OK so I take it that MD is the best way out for us all, and not the iPod when it comes to recording live audio for music and bands and backup sound for movies..Dat would be the other option that is digital but those are really expensive. If only the iPod had a built in SPDIF in/out port like the MD recorders! All problems would be solved......hmmm....seems like only a few extra pennies to put into the production process. But since thats not happening, some of us will have to fall back on the MD players/recorder.
