I need to make arrows to overlay on a still image in the time line. I want to design a small arrow or pointing device in Illustrator and import it into FCP and then drop it over the clip, use wireframe and then move it where I want it. How do I export the graphic from Illustrator so that it looks acceptable in FCP and so that the background of the graphic is transparent? Gif, JPG??? Thanks.

Can you export as a psd without layers? I have never used Illustrator, but this works very well with Photoshop Elements.
