I just finished up a DVD, which I have been burning in PAL format (for US viewers).

I have two or three Europeans for whom I'd like to burn NTSC format disks.

If I check the NTSC format will that be used the next time I burn?

you've got it backwards. NTSC = USA and PAL = Most Other Places. I don't know about iDVD's behavior though

Yes NTSC = US and Japan I think
PAL = ROW

All you need to do is set iDVD to not save render files and restart iDVD. Next time you render it will be in the format you checked before restarting it. You can't change the render once it has started.

NTSC can be played in many devices in the ROW and vice-versa but there is no guaranty.

Generally I shot all my DV in Pal. When I burn to iDVD it is rendered in NTSC, and works perfectly on all NTSC DVD players.

It's great for me, I don't have to do any conversions to send my home videos to my brother in the States.

NTSC is definatley the US & Japan but the are different refresh rates

PAL is a majority of the world, but there are many different Pal standards, but it won't prohibit you from viewing it. ie: PAL 1 vs PAL 2

Also the US and Canada only use NTSC where as the ROW will now have mutlti format DVD players PAL/NTSC - a NTSC disc can be played on a PAL TV or a PAL disc can be played on a NTSC TV.
BUT! a PAL disc will NOT play on a NTSC only player and 100% of the US DVD players are single format only, meaning for your intended US viewer they must have an imported Dual Format player to view the disc.

So make sure of where you intend to send the iDVD disc and get the format right.

I have never changed any format settings in iDVD but if you go to preferences in iDVD you can select the format you wish to burn it in. PAL or NTSC. iDVD will then do any conversions needed

NTSC runs at 60 MHZ
PAL runs at 50 MHZ

Hope this helps somewhat.
if you can't be part of the solution don't be part of the problem!!!!

I changed the format from NTSC (default for USA) to PAL (for my EuroPals) and did a "Save Project As".

I opened the new project, re-processed and burned.

If I put a PAL DVD into my SuperDrive, will it read it or will I get an error message?

you're getting confused between PAL and NTSC, and region coding.

if the disc is made in iDVD it'll have no region coding and you can play it fine.

that would be Hz, not MHz. Some day we'll have the need for 50 million frames per second, but that day is not today

I never asked about region encoding, but I'm glad it was mentioned (as I completely overlooked that bit of silliness).

But I'm still not sure whether the PAL DVD I burned actually is in PAL format. What's the easiest way to find out? I could ship it off to Europe and wait for the reviews :-) but I was hoping for something I could do here, at my Mac.

easiest way: download 0Sex (dvd ripper), put the disc in your drive (quit dvd player if it opens) and just click the "Ti" button in 0Sex. you should see a list of titles in the form of "01 [00:00:00:00] @ 25 fps"

if it says 25 fps, your disc is PAL. if it says 29.97 fps, it's NTSC.
