What's the best practice methodology people have come up so far with say, a 12" or 15" GHz+ mobile workstation with FCP4, and possibly an external Firewire HD? More importantly, how do you copy source material, logged clips, work files, etc.? Do you just make sure to have a copy on the external and use it as a master? Even with powerful desktop workstations, would you recommend the 15"--even though the 12" is miiighty portable (very key)?

What do you do with a laptop to do do quick editing, and then moving to a desktop for more screen real estate/theoretical horsepower?

Thanks very much!

using FCP4 on a 12" would be a pain! this prg needs lots of monitor space!... or, you do use a second monitor...

FCP doesn't effect the "original" material, it just produces a "list" of to-dos. so, best practice is, to have a second drive with the orginal clips (your external hd), 'cause your internal is extensively used by the system.

your project file should finally also be saved on the external drive, so you can use it on a second machine. ( project files and orginal material).

i'm just using FCE, but FCP offers this special file format.. forgotten the name... the video has low resolution, but all your edit datas are correct and you can render the project later in a higher res.

Got that... I think I wouldn't be doing heavy editing on the 12", probably more like log and capture to external, and be done with it. Maybe small spot cuts, too. I've got a pretty good 17" 1Ghz iMac with lots of RAM (works near well or better than some of the G4s we have at work). Also have access to decks, monitors, more drives, etc. to do really intensive work.

Thanks!
