I'm close to finishing my first major project...when I go to "sequence" there's something that says "mixdown audio"...is this something I should use before my final render?

What exactly does it do?

It takes all the audio in the sequence and renders it to one file. This frees up system bandwidth for the video. If you have a lot of tracks it's never a bad idea to mixdown your audio

Wow, I can't believe I didn't know this sooner.

This leads me to another question, but I'll need to make a new thread for it...

Only mix down your audio if a)your finished editing your piece completely or b)you've definitely have finished some parts and won't need to go back in order to free some resources.

What it does is takes your audio track, be it 4,6,8 whatever and mixes them to a stereo, 2 track file.

I'm sure if you have any realtime plugin effects on the tracks, they will be rendered as well.

The book I have (FCE Workshop) recommends mixing the audio down anytime you output to tape - it's easier on the processor/drive and you're less likely to get dropped frames.

It's not like the other files get erased when you mix down. They're still there, in case you change anything, just like how the video works. You can add effects, render and then take them back off as many times as you want. And the vast majority of users don't have audio output for more than two channels.
