Ok..
what am I doing wrong?....
I have purchased 2 different mics to use with the Sony MD recorder.
On both mics you have to shout into the mic to get any type of responce/recording.
I only get strong signal bars on my MD recorder while I'm plugging in the mic or unplugging it...just while the jack is going into the plug will I get any type of signal bars.
But once its plugged in, its like it is not even there.
Do I need to buy some sort of amplifier?
I have the exact same problem when I try to record using the same mics with my G4..
any suggestions?

that's odd. have you tried any other microphone with the MD recorder? even a cheap computer mic. if you can record with it (you'll need it plugged into the MIC IN port), then there's definitely something wrong with your current microphone.

i don't know what MD recorder you are using, but mine (Sony MZ-R50) has a jack with plug-in power, which helps power the little stereo clip mic i use. it also has a high/low mic gain switch.
the mic i use does not work plugged right into my mac, though.

After a trip to Radio Shak:
I was able to use one of my mics by doing this:
plug the mic into a old cassette recorder.
run a line from the cassette recorder's audio out to my Sony MD recorder.
That worked.. sort of.
Radio Shak didn't have any amplifiers that would have helped me out on the mic. So I had to use another recorder to act as the amplifier.
However I'm not real thrilled with the audio quality.

Did you purchase a dynamic microphone or a condenser? It doesn't make sense that the mic would work with your old cassette recorder but not the MD, unless you are accidently plugging into the line in instead of the mic in on the MD. Make sure you also have the mic level set to high.

If you have a condenser (say, from radio shack) make sure you buy a new non-radio shack battery for it. On several occasions I've gotten them doa. Also, make sure your MD is set to mic level input and not to line level input (consult the manual) , otherwise the volume will get cut way down.
If none of those things work, make sure you aren't using a mic that requires phantom power - go buy that $29 condeser at rs.
Still no go, try running something loud into it, like a radio/cd player etc. if that still doesn't work you may have a defective unit.
