I've been through the archive and this hasn't been solved satisfactorily.

I've several AVIs larger than 700mb and would like to burn them to disc and I guess put the extra bits on one CD. I used to buy VCDs, so I'm used to swapping discs mid-movie.

-DivX Doctor II truncates audio on just about any error.

-AviRay just plain chokes.

-DivXRay looked promising but... I've tried each variation and usually get a green screen movie as a result. Most results are worse.

I don't mind keeping them as AVIs, and I do have QTPro for splitting, IF I could get a usable transcode to MOV.

I'm on a G3 400 PB, so please don't think I haven't put enough TIME in trying. :-)

So... what's new in creating PLAYABLE segments from an existing AVI?

if they have mp3 audio, just install the divx.com codec and open the avi in quicktime. For other audios, use ffmpeg with the output file as a wav or mp3 to recode the audio, then add in QTPro

you should also be aware that you can burn up to ~702.3 on a 700 MB disc if you burn in ISO 9660 format instead of Mac/PC Hybrid or whatever Disc Copy does

I never did get ffmpeg to 'make' under Jag and I haven't tried to reinstall any *nix yet under Panther. I should check for a bin package. And a GUI as I'm a CLI idjit.

Let's see... yes , I've put up to 702 on a 9660 disc before. Didn't know the exact number though, thanks.

What I really wonder, damn it... is why don't we have just a plain, flat out, AVI/VfW editor? Damn it.

because avi sucks, and besides hardware compatibility which has a recent and hopefully short-lived requirement for avi, there's no point spending time adding avi muxing code to your app.

I didn't have any trouble at all compiling ffmpeg in Jag a few weeks ago, except I couldn't get lame to be included. Also a binary (with lame) can be found inside the app bundle of ffmpegX, which by the way has an option for splitting avi's but I've heard nothing but complaints about it actually working.

Oh yeah, another way to recode audio to mp3 is something called DivxWMAConverter which uses MEncoder and actually reads any format MEncoder does, not just WMA.

and, um, none of this matters if your files are just divx/mp3 to start with, because the divx.com codec's avi parsing is quite good. just open in QT, make your divisions and Save As. Another thing to note is that the QT mov format is more efficient than avi and often saves 1-2% file size just by moving to mov.

Ok, it's not good news, but it's better than no news. Thanks.

I'll check SF later and see what I can see.
Have you got a line on any app/util that just reports the codec and type/creator with out opening the file? It's a bear sometimes with QT/VLC/MPlayer/BTV on my slow PB. They'll choke on open once in a while when I'm just trying to get the info.

I've checked through - MPEG Tools, Missing Tools and More Missing Tools.

I went with ffmpegX for GUI and mencode/mpeg2enc install. Got a fresh install of MPlayerX as well, it was getting wonky.

I forgot DivxTool, thanks for the reminder.

And ffmpeg (w/GUI) has an insane amount of options. It's gonna take a bit of reading before I can do any tests.

Odd though... several AVIs are DivX/MP3 but no audio in QTPro.
