this may be a really basic question...

I recently backed-up all of my iTunes music onto an external HD. But now that I need to restore my computer, iTunes doesn't want to accept the .m4a file that it created when importing my music CDs.

If I modify the extension from ".m4a" to ".mp3" then it works, but I've got hundreds of files and so it would be very time consuming.

Any suggestions on how to quickly and easily get iTunes to reload my music? is it ok to simply drag&drop the files onto iTunes? Will the music then continue working with iPod and things like that?

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest that you verify if after you restored your mac, the installed iTunes and Quicktime are still the latest versions.
