...and now i gotta get a new tv, rear projection, widescreen, hd.

i think i've settled on 47" or thereabouts, and it's just about impossible to find a 720p without DLP, which i can't afford, so i'm looking at 1080i sets. i'm planning to spend no more than $1700.

any suggestions, advice?

what about DVI, should i look for one with DVI or go with component?

A question: Why do you ditch a tube in favour of a rear-projection tv ? The image quality on a CRT is heaps better. Sure those rear-projection things have bigger screens but you could get yourself a tube with quite a big screen. I went to look at those projection things last week, and even the most high end ones looked crappy (Sony) compared to a normal WEGA. Rear-projection is too dark IMHO and not sharp enough.

I'm with Paleface, stick with tube. I can't stand the way that projection looks. I've seen some that have worse viewing angles then crappy LCDs. I have a RCA 39" (if I remember correctly, too lazy to dig out a tape measure) and the quality is kick ass. Another thing to consider if going HD is a sound system to go with it. I look at it as buying a fast car with not so good tires, your not getting the full effect.
