Hi folks,
I am new to FCP4, and I am wondering if there is a way to do multiple edits (cuts) to a single clip without having to reinsert the clip for each cut. I have noticed when you add an IN and then an OUT, it only allows you to add one of each to each clip. If you try to add another, it really just replaces the original that I first entered.

What I want to achieve is this:

If I have a clip that is 10 min long, and there is 8 peices of the clip of varying lengths that I wish to cut out, I would like to be able to put IN cuts and OUT cuts all through the clip, and render the one file at the end, as opposed to dragging each individual edit of that clip down to the timeline. This would seem a much easier way of doing things. It seems like FCP4 renders the whole file each time as opposed to just the edits, and therefore seems to take longer. Am I missing something ?

If my explanation doesn't make sense, then imagine you taped a movie off tv, and wanted to edit out 5 sets of commercials, but wanted to do them all at once (no this isn't what I am doing, but seemed an easier analogy

Many thanks in advance
Jeremy

Sure. Use the razor blade tool to make your cuts. Once you have a section razor-bladed that you want out, select that clip in the timeline and hit delete (as opposed to backspace). This performs a "ripple delete" (that is, deletes the selected clip in the timeline and then pulls the rest of the timeline in to close the gap).

Check out the Roll, Ripple, Slip, and Slide Edit tools for more. These tools are the heart of complex editing, and are worth their weight in gold to serious editors.

Generally speaking, there are quite a few ways to do just about anything in FCP.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my question. I figured it seemed a little odd to not be able to do such a common task.

all the best
