Good morning,
I have three questions about QuickTime Pro (Windows) that I'm trying to get answers to.
1.) I have a video AVI file that my digital camera (S400) recorded.
I would like to convert this to a QuickTime file format so I
can e-mail it to friends/relatives using Windows & Mac. I
think that the QuickTime format would do this best.
I see that QT Pro imports AVI and exports MOV. Am I right
to assume that if I purchased QT Pro, opened the AVI and
then exported it to QuickTime that would work? Sound and all?
2.) If I purchase the current release of QT Pro, 6.5, so I have to
buy a new QT Pro license when 7.0 is released?
3.) If I purchased QT Pro for Windows, if I buy a Mac in the future
do I need to purchase QT Pro again or will my serial number
for the Windows version work ok?
1. QT Pro can convert any avi or mov file it can display to any avi or mov format it has the compressor for. There are only a couple of avi codecs installed but there is an Indeo 5 codec for QT for Windows available here:

QT does not support variable bit rate mp3 sound in avi format, so any such sound tracks will not work in QT for Windows. But you can use other PC programs like VirtualDub to convert that kind of avi sound track to a format that QT for Windows will accept.
There is a problem with mpeg-1 and 2 files, as QT does not demultiplex the sound to an exportable sound track. You have to use other software to make the sound track a format that QT for Windows will accept. Again, VirtualDub can convert the mpeg-1sound track to wave, which QT for Windows accepts.
2. Probably but they will not likely jump to QT 7 for a while yet and one time (QT3 and QT 4 for Mac both worked with the same Pro key).
3. QT Pro keys are not cross-platform so you would have to purchase a Mac key for Mac versions of QT.
