Plasma HDTV Monitors vs. Computer LCD Resolution Question

I've been looking at plasma dislays and have noticed that most offer resolutions of 1024 x 768 pixels for such large displays 42" diagonal and higher. Obviously the pixels on such displays are large relative to those found in computer LCD displays. However, it seems everyone is touting the clear picture of plasma displays, which I'll admit is striking.

I guess what I'm failing to understand is why these plasma display manufacturers are limiting the number of pixels in such a way when we know that computer LCD displays have so much more fidelity--and why this resolution is needed in computer displays, but not necessarily in plasma TVs if that makes any sense at all. Is it simply to reduce cost? If so, then will resolutions in these plasma TVs continue to increase and picture quality follow suit?

Also, I suppose these plasma TV manufacturers are quoting 1024 x 768 as the minimum resolution to display an HDTV signal. Does this suggest that any Apple LCD monitor has the capability to display an HDTV signal as long as there is some sort of decoder attached?

Any comments on this topic would be welcome. I jut thought it funny that a TV that is so large and has a pretty clear picture is doing so with so few pixels.

Thanks,

I have seen onTechTv where they had a few Plasma TV's only to have the 'burn in' images after a few years...Plasma's are nice but the new LCD monitors/TV's wont burn in at all and most have computer inputs and will translate alot better than Plasma. I think Plasma TV's will be the big scam of the new millenium if more reports of burn in are reported.

TechTV's Plasma TVs? Well, they DO display static images on them for extended periods of time...
