i downloaded a bunch of old television shows as avi files and i would love to watch them, unfortunately when i go to do so only the audio works and it says an appropriate compressor could not be found. on other ones nothing works at all. does anyone know of a way to get these files to work, they defintely are not corrupt. thanks.

Download these codecs and install them:

3ivx D4 X 4.5

DivX 5.1.1

Download these players and AVI utilities:

VLC 0.7.0

MPlayer

DivX Doctor II

These should handle pretty much any movie file you throw at them.

An AVI file that neither VLC or Mplayer can handle... That doesn't really sound probable. Are you sure you actually downloaded the applications and tried them?

One possibility is that it's a mis-named WM9 file. Try changing the extension to .wmv and opening it in Windows Media Player 9 for Mac.

It could also be Indeo Video, but that's doubtful. Try to open it in the Classic Quicktime PLayer if you have it.

It's quite possible it's Indeo video if the video doesn't appear but the audio does.

Open one of the files in QuickTime Player, and choose Show Movie Info from the Window menu. Tell us what is listed under Format.

if it were wmv or asf (or anything but what it's named), quicktime wouldn't give the missing compressor warning, it would say it is a file type it doesn't understand
