I am an Interactive Multimedia student which has been doing web UI for about 8 years now. However, I want to venture into DV and FCE/P, DVD Studio, Soundtrack stuff. I know I can afford the software and some hardware but the hardware has me stumped.

Where can I learn about hardware (review, tips, forums)? What hardware do I need?

When I was in college we had a class Digital Video Editting (all Adobe Premiere based since FCP was 1.0) and we had 60Gb Barracuda drives (if memory serves). They were talking about Blue Ice cards and rendering upgrades at the time. But I am sure time has passed and this is old news. Is rendering still a pain in the butt?

Here is my current setup - PowerMac DA 733 with 1.5Gb ram and 80Gb master and 80Gb slave ATA drives 7200rpm with dual monitor setup powered by Radeon 9000. An iBook 700 dual USB. And three PCs ranging from 1.4Ghz to 1.0Ghz running XP Pro, 2000 Server and Mandrake respectively.

I was debating a G5 dual 1.8 but I just can't do that in the near future. I have an Apple Pro book for FCP 4 and want to get started learning as well as 8hrs of footage from a vacation to begin. My dream is steadily learn en route to making this a new profession.

Sorry for length.

big decisions need big question, no reason to be sorry for that

8h of dv need est. 96Gb of hd!!and this is just for getting the material into the machine, without any editing, grafix etc.

i'm just a hobbiest on video, but BIG hds are of paramount importance! lots of RAM, a fast processor. FCE is a fantastic prg with infinite possibilties, get as many books as you can get (btw: i made a printout of the integrated help pgs - 1400!! my poor laser printer )
