My brother's got an Alesis LX-20 ADAT he uses with his iBook for recording his band. Right now he's using the RCA analog outputs on the ADAT with his Griffin Powerwave USB interface to record the audio on his iBook. In order to record the separate tracks off the ADAT he has to record them each individually. What he would really like to do is use the optical output on the ADAT to record all eight channels at once.
I've only got a cursory understanding of optical I/O for audio. I'm trying to find a USB or Firewire audio interface that supports ADAT optical input and will work with his iBook. Optimally I think something like a Firewire/USB version of the M-Audio Lagoon would be what my brother is looking for. I found M-Audio's Transit USB interface but it only supports S/PDIF input and output which from my understanding the ADAT does not support.
I think MOTU and others have really nice Firewire interfaces that support ADAT optical but my brother doesn't exactly have the $1200 to spend on something like that. Anything that would work for under about $300 would be pretty cool, under $200 would be great. If nothing of this sort exists in this price range what are the more expensive options? All I really know about the interfaces are what the marketing materials say which is not a whole lot.

Look for a Presonus Firestation. Has the ADAT optical interface. It's a bit more though, around $499. Uses firewire. BTW the MOTU 828mkII is around $700. Love mine.
S/Pdif (toslink) optical jacks are only 2 (stereo) channels.

The Presonus FireStation although a fine product, I have one right here, and works under Jaguar....it does NOT work under Panther at this time. After numerous e-mails to Presonus support regarding the issue, I have received one reply that "they would have someone look at the issue". That was prior to Christmas 2003. I have tried the FireStation on three different machines and have proven that it does not work on a G4 or a G5 running Panther while it does work under Jag on all three. I have the original G5...was shipped with Jag 10.2.7(G5) and then the update to 10.2.8(G5)...it works fine.

If you check with the patent and copyright offices, the trademark Firestation, registered by presonus is declared dead. Maybe they are working on something else for namm.
