I am interested in learning to play the piano. I want to be able to read music, not just memorize songs. I was wondering:

- Is there any REALLY GOOD software for OS X that can teach me?

- Can I learn effectively using a midi keyboard? What is the minimum number of keys you'd suggest I get? Should I get a sustain pedal? Any recommendations on a specific keyboard would be appreciated.

64 keys is as small as you'll want. 88 is a full size piano. I suggest just getting a begingin piano book at a local music store and starting from there. Get a teacher too. Talent isnt always free!!! Get a few lessons at least.

Be patient.

Sustain pedal is a must. 2nd only to a power cable!

good luck

Hey, I was willing to pay for software! But seriously... I would think that software had reached the point where it could do a very effective job teaching you.

I understand the value of a music teacher, software just seems such a convenient way to learn. At home, whenever I feel like it, etc.. Plus the software would presumably be able to aid me in my practice time, evaluating and drilling me, etc..

Perhaps a combination of the two would be a good way to go. I'm still interesting in hearing about any good software titles out there...

i have two suggestions:

get a keyboard with weighted keys, else you'll be a fish out of water when you play on a real piano.

get a teacher. really.

Amazing.... I have a daughter without anyone showing me how to do it and yet I havent heard Jesus cry.....

on a more serious note, one is able to teach himself whatever he pleases though it will be like re-inventing the wheel, alot of mistakes and frustration that could of been avoided by asking the apropriate person on how to do it
