Hi all,
I am new to the video-creation field, and have no clue what to charge for the following project! My friend works for in the marketing department for a University who is looking to create a 3 minute montage of video footage culminated from the University hockey season. The video will be distributed to players and personnel to reflect on the season, and they have said to use any music or songs - no licensing needed. The marketing department will provide the most tantalizing hockey clips, but other than that, all creative aspects of the video will be left up to me. Woo hoo!
Anyway, my experience thusfar has been with FCP and iMovie in creating amateur videos (a.k.a. jazzed-up home movies). I have a small company doing website design, and am a designer by trade - so I am a bit clueless when it comes to charging for video editing. What would you charge for something of this scope? Any words of wisdom to share?
Thanks so much, any feedback is greatly appreciated!
- M

How much time do you think it will take? Do you need to shoot anything for it or is it all going to be provided?

If your looking for advice, here comes.
WARNING. I don't know who told you not to worry about licensing, but if you use copyrighted songs, and CHARGE for the creation of the video, you will need a synchronization license from the record label.
The length of time of the video isn't really relevant when talking about licensing rights.
Second, as far as a charge...what do you make per hour for your web design? A three minute movie will involve a couple of hours of editing at least. Start with that, and see if you can ask for that with a straight face. If not, tweak the price accordingly.

Hey Axo1ot1 and edavis,
Thanks for the replies, and the warning! That is sound advice about paying for music licensing - it did concern me, even though my friend insisted that it would not become an issue.
I think the best alternative is for me to create the video for free, pro-bono. I have some free evenings and can consider this a favor for a friend, while leaving any future music and legal responsibilities up to those at the Uni.
Thanks for the advice! Have a great day!
