microphone troubles

I can't get any microphones to work.

The old microphone that came with my G3 Tower, and my friend's pc microphone aren't working in my computer, both of these worked fine on the G3. When I plug them into my dual 1.25 g4 they just don't register. Why is this so, and how can I fix this.
