I have many AIFF's, many WAV's, and many MP3's which I would like to plunk into GarageBand and manipulate/arrange, but I don't see an easy way to do such.

Is this possible? If so, how?

I just dragged in an AIFF into a composition.
If all else fails always try the Drag and Drop method.
