I attempted to search for 'iDvd' and G3, but G3 was too short so I couldn't search.

Anyone?

If not, what other options do I have for burning a DVD? I have a 600mhz G3, 512megs ram, 7200rpm drive, firewire dvd burner....

Thanks!

not exactly. iDVD only supports Apple "superdrives" and no G3 machines have those (do they?). The other options are DVD Studio Pro, Toast 6, ffmpegX, sizzle, or whatever OEM software came with your burner (I think LaCie has something).

DVD studio Pro has always required a G4.

http://www.apple.com/ilife/

System Requirements:
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor
o 600MHz G3 or faster required for GarageBand
o G4 or faster required for GarageBand software instruments
o 733MHz G4 or faster required for iDVD
So.. if it can by any means, it would be very slow.
iDVD doesn't support external DVD burner as well.

LaCie distrubites an app called CaptyDVD. It's not iDVD for polish and ease of use, but it's not too bad either. I had opportunity to make a couple of DVDs of EyeTV archives, and it went pretty well.
OS X: Where software installation doesn't require wizards with shields.

Just to be clear, iDVD 4 runs on G4s without SuperDrives. You just can't burn your project obviously, until you move the project to another machine.

Incorrect. Up to I believe 1.5.1, DVD Studio Pro worked just fine on G3s.

Believe what you want, but I have dvd studio pro 1.1 on my computer, and it requires a G4.

You are right. You need a G4 to run DVD Studio Pro 1.x on both Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X
DVD Studio Pro 1.5.2 for Mac OS X

DVD Studio Pro 1.5.1 Update for Mac OS 9

Some suggested BitVice for encoding MPEG-2 content on the G3, but it will take a long time to complete the job.

Well, you could always get this:
pioneer drive at OWC

Then you would have the internal Superdrive. Then there's always Sonnet G4 upgrades.

As Uncle Skeleton said, Toast 6 is an option. I've never actually used it to do DVD video, but it claims to do menus, chapters and buttons. (Though not with the finesse of iDVD, I imagine.)

It also supports G3s and (almost certainly) your external DVD writer.

I have one already. Also, if I swapped out my Harmoni for a G4 from Powerlogix, I'd lose the firewire port, which defeats the purpose of everything in the first place.

I'm getting a new puter.

well, some brave hearded connected a pioneer 105 to the internal IDFE of a g3, and iDVD3 was running, but sloooooooooow! the mulitplexing makes extensive use of the altivec, which is not included in the G3.

there are free tools as ffmpeg, which can multiplex a .dv stream into a mpg2, which you finally can burn with toast6 - but you need tiiiiiiiime
