I've come across this problem a few times, so I wanted to see if anyone knows of a solution.

Sometimes with a .mpg file that I've downloaded over the internet, I will know that the movie is, for example, 1 1/2 minutes long. The file size is accordingly large.

However, QuickTime will only play the first 10 - 15 seconds, and then act as if the movie is over. It will "loop" these same 10 - 15 seconds if I choose to loop, and so forth.

However, I can sometimes "trick" it to play additional portions of the movie that did not originally play. I can do this by allowing it to "finish," and then either dragging the progress bar backwards, or clicking in part of the movie that would normally have already been played. But this will show the "unseen" video.

If I do this multiple times, I can get to the third or fourth "section" of what should have been a continuous video.

I'm guessing that this has something to do with the encoding process. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? Do I need to "fix" the original video, or change a setting, or something else?

Thanks.

This problem with mpegs is apparently a result of improper merging of a file, from a newsgroup or other source, that was split into segments. You can try VLC (aka videolanclient):

it just means the mpeg was segmented and then instead of properly recombined the files were just appended to one another. You can do this with your own mpeg files using the command line app "cat" (but don't).

you can play these files in VLC, or you can use bbDemux to extract the audio and video streams (sometimes they come out as one of each, sometimes many of each), and then re-encode them because quicktime won't let you edit mpeg media.

edit: too slow I guess. I'll work on my typing
