I have in the neighborhood of 3000 LP's, I would like to make compilation CD's as well as creating CD's for those LP's no longer averrable in any format.

What is the best process, equipment, & software to import the LP's into my new G5. Should I consider a digital DJ turntable that has optical out? If I use my existing turntable do I need a phono preamp to go from the turntable to the G5?

This obvious is a large undertaking so I want to do it right as well as ensure quality.

I also am assuming that I will have to key in all album titles & song info as CDDB would not be able to work with the analog information.

Thanks,
Cheers,

Just say "NO" to PLASTIC SPEAKERS!!

My solution may be WAY TOO low-tech for you, but, Toast comes with an audio cable to connect from the audio-out into the Mac. It also comes with CD-Spin Doctor, which converts the signal into a format which can be burnt on CD. Could this work for you?

If you do a search, you'll come up with a number of threads about this. I'm not familiar with optical-out DJ turntables, but I wouldn't go out and buy one just for this. Just connect your turntable to your existing phono preamp (or receiver) and connect that to the G5's analog input, using an RCA-to-mini Y-converter (available at any electronic store, or included with Toast). Then record with Toast/Disk Doctor or the equivalent (again, do a search and you'll come up with names, or go to Macupdate.com and search the audio recording apps - there are a few free ones but Toast is full-featured).

Alternative: buy an iMic or PowerWave from Griffin, and use their free FinalVinyl software to record direct from the turntable to the G5 via USB without a phono preamp (the software takes care of the EQing).

I think that you can just type in the artist and album name and then choose "Get CD Track Names" from the Advanced Menu and it will download them. Haven't tried it personally, though. But it's potentially a big timesaver b/c you can enter Artist and Album info for multiple items, as well as get CD track names.
