Recording without software?

I don't know how to exactly ask this question.

I have a project where I need to develop a system to digitally record video directly into the computer without using a software program. It would be part of a web interface, displaying the video in real time while saving it to the hd. Any ideas or suggestions. I appreciate your help.

I don't understand. Is the video coming from the web or from the user's machine? Do you want it saved for use by the browser or by another program? What format is the video in? Are you allowed to use Java applets?

I guess the best way to put it is that it would essentially be a security system, that once activated, will begin recording. The video is coming from the users machine and does not necessarily need to be viewed on any other machine, as there will be a distribution system once the video is recorded and saved to the hard drive. An appelet can be used.

The basis of the program is that the video is recorded. A live stream to other machines on the network would be a plus, but not necessary. The format doesn't matter at this point. I just need to know if this can be done and a push in the right direction.

The project is more research to see if we can integrate this into existing software that we own.
Thanks

So, you want a web-based thingy that'd record from the user's webcam onto their HD for streaming/archiving, right? Hmmmm.....Python sounds like a good bet, and it's built into OSX. On the other hand, I believe you could actually write this as a flash actionscript, it has support for interacting with people's webcams.

But the way you're describing this thing makes me think you have a bit more research to do before you're ready to jump in to this....but good luck anyway.
