Hi,

I usually use VLC or MPlayer on my OS X box when QT can't open the .avi file and it works absolutely fine. But is there any similar players around for Mac OS 9? Or how would I else do to open the .avi's?

TIA

QT Player can open avi files but a particular avi may have been encoded with a compressor that is not encluded in the default QT installation. Nowadays, many of those are mpeg-4 variants and installing these two codecs will allow you to play most of them in QT. The 3ivx one does come with both OS X and OS 9 codecs but I am not sure about the divx one. In any case, the 3ivx one will play almost any avi file.

If the avi was encoded with one of the Indeo codecs you in fact will have to view it in either Classic or actually boot into OS 9. There are some Indeo codecs for Classic referenced here:

Ok, this works fine on most .avi's. But now I have a .mpg file that won't work with QT but the do open fine in VLV or MPlayer in OS X. How do I deal with it on my OS 9 box?

Either it's MPEG-2, which will cost you $20 to play in QT, or it's not an MPEG, and since OS 9's QT isn't braindead and usually checks the file's contents instead of just the name for identification, this would mean it's probably something QT can't play like asf. But just to be sure, open it in HexEdit and compare it to the samples here:
