Hey folks. I just sold my ZR20 and need a new one. I was looking on ebay at the ZR80s and 85s and wonder if the priec difference is worth it for the 85. Is there a big difference?
which would you buy.
for the same price as the 85, I can get a 80 (new on both) + I'll get an extra battery, case, tele lens, tripod (a decent one too) and lens covers (3 of them)
the batteries for these things seem to be around $35 right now, tripod, cheap ones are $20, case- $20, lens $40
help

kindof everything. I actually do some "PRO" stuff for my marching band that I teach along with other projects. I'm using a Canon GL2 next week to shoot a concert for my middle school.
I dont have a tripod anymore, just a monopod, and could use one along with those other goodies.
I basically need a camera with pass though (I think most have that now) and low light abilities. Anything over that is just sweet!

If you can find a close-out ZR-70MC, I'd go with that: better specs (optical zoom, etc.), has a hot shoe (for a mic or Canon's VL-3 lite). It can probably be found cheaper.

One main differnce is that the 85 has a memory slot (compact flash?). Whereas the 80 does not. I guess that would come in handy if you plan on taking stills with it. The 80 can still take stills but it records them on the tape instead of the removable memory.

If you do pro stuff, go for a Canon GL or XL system. Your problems will be taken once and for all.

i use the ZR80 and really like it, for the price it is great! The one limitation the entire ZR series does have however is NO external mic input.
Cheers!

Doesn't the AV port double as a mic input? It does with the ZR-70.

I think the main advatage the 85 has over the 80 is the optical zoom. 85 has like 20x or 22x, whereas the 80 has something much lower (16x?). But, with the accessories you mentioned, this probably will not matter much. I say go with the 80 and save a few bucks.
Keep in mind, the camera does not come with a 6-4 firewire cable for your Mac.
edit: its 20x(85) vs. 18x(80)
bah - just noticed the old dates on this thread.

What about the video/audio input output on the 85 as the 80 only has video/audio output?
This feature would let you record any TV struff or VHS onto the camara and then pass it on to your computer.

Every model in the ZR lineup has anolog to digital converter capacity... I have done it several times with a ZR80. It is one of the main features mentioned on Canon's site or the ZR series.
