handbrake- difference between ffmpeg and xvid

Whats the difference? Ffmpeg encodes about twice as fast. Is the quality poorer? Is ffmpeg optimized for altivec? Why do people like xvid? Yes BTW I am a newbie when it comes to video.

Sorry but last question why is it when I enlcode the only option for resolution is 640x480. My screen is bigger than that on my AL PB.
