Replace .avi audio?

I've been poking around online for a bit to no avail. I'm looking to rip the audio off of an avi file and replace it with .mp3 audio that I have as a separate file....do I need to use FFmpegx, FinalCutPro, or something else? I can rip the audio off of an .avi file with QT pro, but how to attach new audio?

Just in case you're interested, the film is Microcosmos, all macro shots of the insect world, and the audio is Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas by Godspeed You! Black Emperor...they sync up, not necessarily in a Wizard of Oz, Dark Side of the Moon kinda way, but enough to make both the album and the music infinitely more interesting.

Extract the audio as AIFF and use iTunes to make an mp3 of it. Use Edit/Delete Track to remove the old audio track. You can add a new track (open the new mp3 in QT Pro, copy it to clip board and use Add to add to the video) in QT Pro but when you save it (Save As a self-contained movie) it will be a avi video track embedded inside a QT .mov file. That makes no difference as long a the machine it plays on has QT installed. I just tried it and it played in both MacOS and Windows98SE(QT installed). Just remember that it no longer will be a valid avi file so Windows Media Player in Windows will not play it.

Aw, forget it then-if WMP can't play it, I guess I'll just give up.

Anyway, cool, thanks.

If there's a will there's a way! If it's DivX video (or any flavour of MPEG-4) you can use the DivX codec to export as passthrough to an avi file. You can then open that file in ffmpegX, select passthrough for video and select your MP3 file for audio. Save as .avi file!

I don't know how well ffmpeg accepts .mov files as input (testing right now), but if it accepts video-only QT files you should be able to do it with non-DivX/MPEG-4 video too.

Edit: It seems as if you can get almost any video in an avi file using MetadataHootenanny to change the fourcc to DIVX, passing through using the DivX codec, and changing the fourcc back in the resulting avi file. It appears as if Quicktime doesn't like Sorenson Video in avi files, but VLC plays it OK.

If you install 3ivx on the PC then you can play mov/mp4 files in any DShow app, or remux the mov to avi with the 3ivx filter suite (for Windows, not Mac)
