New software and firmware for EyeHome has been released. EyeHome is the Network Media Player from Elgato, makers of EyeTV.

These features should make it much easier for EyeHome users to store content outside of their Home directory, which is essential for those with lots of movies or music.

******

Here are the new features for EyeHome:

EyeHome will now follow aliases placed in the Movies and Music folders, allowing for content to be stored elsewhere.

Everything kept in the Music folder is now available in EyeHome, including items outside of the iTunes Library.

EyeHome will play unencrypted .WMA files that are kept in your Music folder.

EyeHome supports .PLS files that are placed in your Music folder. These files link to Internet Radio stations; you can access your favorite stations in this way.

"Play All" feature (for open folders and playlists) added to interface. The Play button on the remote will activate this feature, when it is present on screen.

The Zoom button on the remote now activates Search, when that icon is present on screen.

The Music > Album section now lists songs in album order.

The Services > News section has an improved interface.

The Pictures section has larger, brighter and clearer thumbnails.

The EyeHome hardware boots much more quickly.

Personal Web Sharing no longer needs to be on for EyeHome to operate.

Problems with unencrypted AAC support have been fixed.

Various playback and stability issues have been fixed.

Is playback of MPEG2 or 4 improved? I couldn't get MPEG4 video plus AAC audio in either an mp4 or MOV container to work (unknown audio codec error). MPEG4 and MP3 in MOV worked ok, but MPEG4 video playback had all kind of artifacts and stuttered frequently. MPEG2 at DVD bitrates would play back at about 5 fps. We eventually had to pull our demo unit off the display computer because almost no video worked.

EyeHome 1.0.3 should have MPEG-4 movies playing as expected, with no unknown audio errors.

MPEG-2 has played back at high bitrates for us with no problem. It sounds like you might have had a network issue that caused the low frame rate. You can contact me directly if you want to explore that further.
