So I've been looking a lot at this CoreImage and CoreVideo stuff, and it just made me think of something.

Theoretically, will this technology be able to be implemented in such a way that we'll never again have to render video in Final Cut Pro? In the WWDC keynote it looked as if a PowerMac G5 would have no trouble laying any video effect over a clip in realtime. Will the fact that it was an H.264 stream instead of an uncompressed DV or HD stream affect the speed of the render? And even if there would be a performance hit, Tiger won't be out until next year, when we'll conceivably be past 3 GHz on the G5.

Any thoughts on this?

Well this technology could and most likely be worked into future versions of Final Cut. The OS will not replace applications. What was shown was a tech demo. Core Video/Image/Audio will be available to enhance applications capability and more. It is the underpinnings. The editor software will still be required. This reminded me of when they showed off Final Cuts ability to render effects in real time.

Final Cut Pro already makes use of a few Quartz features to lighten the load. However I expect FCP to offer some nifty features that today are a little too complex without Core Image/Video.

Apple hasn't described the full capabilities yet but I'm betting that they will utilize this new API across the board since offloading as much as you can of the display and effects processing to the GPU means more efficiency and less CPU drain.
