I have these mpg files, but they are mpeg1 muxed (so they are one track, no separate video or audio, they're combined), when I try to convert them to .mov format, I only get video, no sound.

Can someone please help me?

look for a free tool called bbdemux
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14618

run it; you'll got two files, a video .m1v and an audio .m1a file.
with qt pro you can convert the video into a .dv stream
with iTunes you can convert the audio into an .aiff
open both new files with qt pro.
copy the audio file.
switch to the video file.
click "add scaled"
export this file as .dv stream

Up to that point you were right, but you should never (EVER) add scaled audio to video. Instead add scaled video to audio. It's a much bigger burden for the processor to change the pitch of the sound to match the video than it is for it to change the frame-rate of the video

I'm having problems, iTunes won't let me convert the .mla to an .aiff, I'm getting an error (error -2003).

Why convert to DV? Can't you just leave the video as MPEG1 and add whatever format of audio?

OK.I got my DVD burned. It took a while on Stage 3, Asset encoding.
Everything turned out fine, though.
