need to watch avi on a dvd player

so, i have this movie i made at school on a disc, it's an avi file and takes up almost 700 megs. i would like to burn it in a format my dvd player could read of a cd-r. i think i'll need a program to convert the avi to a readable file.

any help or suggestions would be great.
