I bought the following cd: Defected in the House Eivissa '04. It contains three cd's, two with only (#1 and #2) music, and one (#3) with music and extra material. CDs #1 and #3 work just fine, I can play them on my powerbook G4 1.25 ghz, import to itunes and to my iPod. But the cd #2 gives me huge problems.

What happens when I put the cd is that it first chokes on it, but manages to read it and gets all the song titles and so on. I can somewhat play songs 1-4, but after that it cannot read anything. I can import tracks 1-4, but they don't import very nicely (very slowly and with some errors), after that I cannot import anything at all. I can drag tracks 1-4 from the cd to the finder (desktop or so), but trying to drag the others turns the following error message: finder cannot complete.... 'cause some data in "..." could not be read or writteh. error -36

A similar problem occurs on pc's with win xp. No matter if you play it in itunes or win media player.

The cd is with 16 tracks and holds 773.4 mb. It plays in some cd-players but not all. Any tips on how I should deal? I have been in contact with the manufacturer, www.defected.co.uk, and they were very friendly (they sent me a new copy) but the same problems with that one. I really want this cd onto my iPod. The cd says nothing ab out copy-protection and the two other cd's work just fine.

does it have the regular "Compact Disc" logo on it?

If it doesn't, they've been ****ing with the format to gain copy protection.

And at over 650 MB size, it better not have that logo on it, else the manufacturer could be sued by Philips for sticking a CD logo on something that violates the Red Book standard.

obviously, this "cd" is copy protected.

1) give it back to the manufacturer "this is NOT a cd!" - in your case: ... that's a nogo.

2) look for a standalone cd player which is able to playback this piece of cr***- digitize the analog signal (e.g. Griffins iMic), use a software to change it into mpg3/aac...

3) look for an old Mac...- maybe you have one in the cellar, remember: Old Macs Never Die! ;-) - some people recognize, that old cd rom drives are able to playback these "cds" - rip it here.. if you don't have any ripping software for this senior Mac: just dragndrop the aiffs from the "cd" to the hd and transport it from there to your younger Mac...

ok, I tried a number of things nad got it to work on two compuers, both of them WinXP. The thing, though, I believe is that it could only be read by drives that were cd-read only (no burnes). Thanx all for you help!

I think DVD drives can read copy protected CDs too. 650mb discs are redbook standard and will play on anything, 700mb discs are also acceptable (maybe not redbook, but they work), but 775mb on (I'm assuming) an 800mb disc is just too much data crammed on too small a disc. Not too many CD drives will read it, as (already pointed out) it's not really even a CD.
I say - find a way to rip it on a DVD drive and then take it back and bitch that it's defective!

I do use a Pioneer04 DVD recorder as my main drive - and to my pitty it is NOT able to read some copy protected audio CDs...- this is a realy a sad thing, you still have the right of your personal copy of a owned cd/dvd, but you're not allowed to override any copy protection.

as i mentioned in my posting above, i have an old 7200 with its internal cd-rom (no idea which one, the factory build in), and some, not every, cp cd can be read out...-

I own a cd of a movie soundtrack ("Solino") which is marked on the cover as copy protected, which doesn't have the official cd-logo and which cannot be read by any cd-rom drive, mac or pc...- i choose to got the long way via analog, which means, cd standalone, analog out, iMic in, digitizing, ripping into aac... time consuming, little less quality, but working ;-)
