When trying to import an MPEG file into iMovie 4.0.1 I get the following message. "Can't open file. Skipping it and continuing." Anyone have any idea what the problem might be and a possible way around it??

Does it open fine and playback with quicktime ?

If you have quicktime pro, and it plays back fine with quicktime, then you can convert it direct to DV format in quicktime, then try to import the DV file.

Thanks. It looks like the quicktime conversion is the way to go. The file plays fine in quicktime and will import after quicktime conversion.

Thanks again

Just a point of clarification iMovie is only a DV format editor. It will not support any other type of codec

Have you ever tried the Import function in iMovie 4? You're in for a surprise.
OS X: Where software installation doesn't require wizards with shields.

Ok I'll give you that iMovie has an import function. However I was unable to import mpeg4 video when I just tried it and the soerenson video I just tried took almost twice as long as it did straight out of quicktime converting the same file. I don't have the MPG2 software on my work laptop right now so I was unable to test the claims of the original author. Will be intrested to see that when I get home.

On the other hand it doesn't invaidate my statement of iMovie is a DV editor as when you import that little progress bar you see is the computer turning your file into a quicktime DV file.

To me it seems cleaner and faster to do those conversions in QT
